Alaska Recording Information
ALASKA REQUIREMENTS FOR REAL ESTATE DEED DOCUMENTS

Alaska is broken up into boroughs, not counties. Public records are administered through the use of recording districts. The State Recorder’s Office oversees the 34 recording districts in Alaska.

• A deed submitted for recording in Alaska must have a title that reflects its overall intent as a quit claim deed. For titles that contain multiple functions, the document is indexed under the first title only, unless the submitter wants it to be recorded for multiple purposes.

• A 2-inch margin should be on the top of the first page. A 1-inch margin should be used on all remaining sides, and on all subsequent pages. Taping, gluing, or stapling one page onto a bigger page is not an acceptable way to meet margin requirements.

• The text of the document must be of consistent clarity. Documents should be submitted on opaque white paper, no larger than 8.5x14. Font size should be no smaller than 10-point font.

• The interested parties, as well as a legal description of the property should be clearly identified on the document. All required indexing information must be written in English. The legal description should be complete enough that the real property can be easily located and identified. At minimum, it should contain the section, township, range, and meridian designation, or in the case of subdivided property, the lot, block, subdivision name, or plat number of the parcel.

• A document must indicate the district for which it is to be recorded. To find your district, go to the District Listing section on the Alaska Department of Natural Resources webpage.

• The ‘Return To’ information on the document must contain the name and complete mailing address of the person to whom the document will be returned after recording. If the return address information is given in a cover letter, the letter can be recorded with the document, and will thus be treated as public record. The return address information should not be given in the margin of the document.

• Documents must contain original signatures, unless the document is an authorized copy.

• Deeds must contain a complete mailing address of the people who are granting or acquiring an interest.

• If a document amends, corrects, modifies, or releases a previously recorded document, the current document must contain the book and page number or serial number of the prior recording.
