A storm that could threaten a million homes would have been\nrare a generation ago. Not anymore. Today\u2019s hurricanes gather their power over\nwarming ocean and gulf waters. A warmer atmosphere holds more moisture,\ncreating heavier rains. At the same time, dry areas of the country are hotter,\nand losing moisture. And that increases the risks for heat waves, droughts or\nwildfires.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Ida Shakes the East Coast<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Late in August 2021, Hurricane Ida crashed into New Orleans\nat 150 miles an hour. Storms surged over the coast. The lights went out for\ndays. Wind shattered windows, broke roofs apart, and toppled walls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New Orleans withstood the storm better than other areas.\nAfter Katrina, the Louisiana\u2019s southern coast was fortified by the U.S. Army\nCorps of Engineers, advised by experts from the Netherlands. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the storm\u2019s \u201cremnants\u201d were a force to be reckoned with north of the city. They did startling damage as they headed up the continent \u2014 through Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and New York. People were trapped on flooded roadways and in basements. More than 50 perished. New York\u2019s subways filled with water for the third time in one summer. The National Weather Service announced its first flash flood warning for New York City<\/a>. Karen Clark & Co. estimates that Ida will prompt nearly $18 billion in insurance<\/a> payouts \u2014 apart from coverage from the National Flood Insurance Program<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The <\/em><\/strong>flood maps<\/em><\/strong><\/a> factor into lending decisions. Redfin Says Home Buyers Need Climate Data<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Before Ida hit, Redfin rolled out a new feature based on climate\ndata. Integrating ClimateCheck\u00ae, it\u2019s designed to predicts drought, heat,\nfire, flooding and storms between now and 2050 by address or area. Browsers who\nwant a feel for the climate risks over a 30-year period (the length of a\ntypical new mortgage) will now find a rating, on a scale of zero to 100, for\nthe immediate surroundings of homes throughout the contiguous United States.\nThis follows the Realtor.com<\/em>\u00ae website\u2019s integration of Flood FactorTM<\/sup>\nnumbers for real estate listings last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

ClimateCheck considers government and NGO models for greenhouse gas emissions and weather patterns<\/a>, focusing on the current risks, and the degree to which a given area can be expected to change. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
