About the Edgecombe County Recorder's Office

The register of deeds is responsible for recording and maintaining records related to real property in Edgecombe County.

Recording Fees

The fee to record the first 15 pages of a verified document is $26. Each additional page after 15 is $4.

The fee to record a deed of trust is $64 for up to 35 pages and $4 for each additional page.

The excise tax on deeds is $1 per $500.

Multiple instruments in one document will be $10, in addition to regular recording fees.

Documents that do not meet the requirements will be recorded with extra fees. If the font size is smaller than 10 point but is still considered to be legible by the Register of Deeds, the instrument may be recorded without extra fees.

The nonstandard document fee is $25, which is in addition to regular recording fees.

A self-addressed stamped envelope should accompany documents.

Document Requirements

* Documents should be on white paper that is 8.5 x 11 inches or 8.5 x 14 inches.

* The font should be black and should not be smaller than 10 point. Printing should be on one side of a page only. Blanks in an instrument can be completed in pen.

* The top of the first page should have a blank margin of 3 inches and blank margins of at least 1/2 of an inch on remaining margins.

* Below the 3-inch margin, a document title should be given.

* Documents must be executed and acknowledged in strict compliance with North Carolina's statutory requirements for acknowledgments.

* All deeds must include a tax certification prior to recording by the tax collector's office unless the following statement is present: "This instrument prepared by: ______________, a licensed North Carolina attorney. Delinquent taxes, if any, to be paid by the closing attorney to the county tax collector upon disbursement of closing proceeds."

* A return name and address should be given on the first page.

* Deeds are required to have the grantee's current mailing address before they can be recorded.

* The owner of residential real property shall furnish a residential property disclosure statement to the purchaser. Details of this statement can be found in 47E-4 of the North Carolina general statutes.

* A legal description of the real property should be included in the deed.

* The purchase price should be on the deed, as this is how the excise tax is calculated.
