Document Requirements

Property documents are recorded and maintained online using the Automated City Register Information System (ACRIS). This is a digital storage and retrieval system for personal and real property-related documents in Manhattan, the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Queens (not available for Staten Island).

ACRIS provides online access to documents and associated data. The public can search for property record indexes and view document images back to 1966. Documents prior to 1966 must still be viewed on microfilm and microfiche at the City Register's offices in each of the four boroughs (except Staten Island).

The recording process is used to provide accurate and reliable property records for land title ownership and interests. Along with individuals, this information is used by many businesses. Banks, lawyers and insurance companies make decisions on deeds and mortgages, etc. based on this data. These records are also used to establish credit worthiness.
